Life Without Electricity: What Would the World Look Like Today

Posted on June 17, 2025June 17, 2025 by james Nwanganga

Take a deep breath and imagine living in a world without electricity. Sounds impossible, right? But let’s stretch our imagination and dive into this alternate reality. A world without the spark that powers almost everything we know and love today.

Mornings Would Never Be the Same

No electricity means no alarm clocks, no phone vibrations waking you up at 5:00 am, and no pressing snooze three times. Your body would have to learn how to wake up with the sun, or with the help of a loud rooster outside your window.

You’d light a kerosene lantern or a candle to get ready, carefully balancing it in one hand while you brush your teeth or search for clean clothes. And no, you can’t iron those clothes unless you want to heat an iron with charcoal.

Breakfast? Don’t bother to plug in that electric kettle. You’d either boil water over firewood or just sip garri like a real OG.

Phones? Nonexistent. Talk About Peace and Isolation.

Let’s be honest, most of us can’t survive two hours without our phones, let alone a lifetime. No electricity means no smartphones. That means no Instagram, no TikTok, no Twitter threads to rant on, no WhatsApp chats, no Google Maps, no voice notes from besties, no work emails at odd hours… wait, maybe that last one isn’t so bad.

Need to tell someone you’ve arrived safely? You’d better send a pigeon. Or walk to their house. Or just hope they know you made it.

Fridges, Freezers, and the Lost Art of Preservation

Your favourite Sunday stew would need to be cooked every day. There’s no fridge to keep it overnight. There’s no cold water waiting for you after being in the sun. Forget ice cream, chilled drinks, or frozen chicken.

Everything would have to be bought in small portions and cooked fresh. And let’s not even talk about how food would get spoilt within hours in the Nigerian heat.

Those midnight cravings? Gone. Because there’s no microwave to warm anything and no TV to keep you company either.

Businesses Would Have a Hard Time Thriving

A world without electricity is a world without most modern businesses. Tech companies? Gone. Online shopping? Doesn’t exist. You can’t code or design on a typewriter, can you?

Your barber would use scissors only. Salons wouldn’t have dryers. Seamstresses would go back to pedal machines. Cinemas would never exist. Hospitals wouldn’t have life-saving machines. Students would read with lanterns and submit handwritten assignments.

And small businesses? They’d suffer. No POS machines, no internet, no online marketing. Just word of mouth and pure hustle.

Home Would Feel Very, Very Different

Evenings would come early, not because the sun set, but because the lights didn’t come on. You’d sit in the dark, talking to family or staring at the sky. No Bluetooth speaker to play music. No fan or AC to cool you down. Just mosquitoes and silence.

You’d have to rely on books, storytelling, or board games. Which sounds nostalgic until you realise there’s no NEPA to shout “Up NEPA!” for. No joy in darkness turning to light.

So, Why Are We Imagining This?

Because sometimes, to appreciate something, you need to imagine what life would be like without it. Electricity isn’t just about powering your gadgets. It powers your work, home, comfort, connection to people, and world.

And that’s where iRecharge comes in.

We make access to electricity and everything else that comes with it easier. From buying light tokens to airtime, data, and paying your bills, iRecharge is the shortcut to stress-free living. No long queues. No late-night walks to the nearest vendor. Just one tap, and you’re good.
